The founding class in Dennison Hall

Our story

Ten guys came back from Lisbon with a plan.

Two years later, 52 men founded Sigma Chi at Northeastern. Here is how that happened, and what is next.

Lisbon.

Ten Northeastern first-years spend a semester in Portugal on the NUin program. They come home in January with a tight friendship and a shared read on Greek life at Northeastern: nothing there was built for them.

2024

Two brothers on the Green Line

The question.

Sean Fitzgerald asks what it would take to found a fraternity instead of joining one. The group grows to about twenty. They look at national organizations and pick Sigma Chi, for its values and, just as much, for how seriously it supports new chapters.

Spring 2025

The pitch.

Sigma Chi headquarters comes to campus. The case to Northeastern's Interfraternity Council: only about 12% of men at Northeastern are in Greek life, so a new chapter grows the community instead of splitting it. After a five-day vote, Sigma Chi gets the green light.

Fall 2025

Interviews.

One-on-one interviews with Sigma Chi headquarters and a tabling season on campus. Interest climbs from 15 to 20 to 50 to 100. The chapter's identity comes into focus: builders, athletes, founders, and people who wanted a hand in something new.

January 2026

The founding class in Dennison Hall

52 men.

The Sigma Chi Pi Associate Chapter is founded at Northeastern University. Five weeks of Preparation for Brotherhood follow, then elections, bylaws, and committees. Every position is filled by someone doing it for the first time.

March 2026

Brothers at Relay for Life

$10,345 in a week.

All 52 brothers show up to Relay for Life. 129 donors, 2nd among Northeastern fraternities, in the chapter's first semester.
